The Hammered Dulcimer: Ancient Ancestor of the Piano
Martha Giles, an accomplished musician and illustrator from Virginia Beach, Virginia, presented a program demonstrating the hammered dulcimer on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 at the Whiting Public Library.
The hammered dulcimer is a stringed musical instrument with the strings stretched over a trapezoidal sounding board. It is played by striking the strings with small mallet hammers. The origins of the dulcimer are uncertain, but it is believed that it originated in Iran (Persia) around 2000 years ago.
The audience thoroughly enjoyed listening to and learn about this unique musical instrument!
