Genealogy Collection

The Whiting Public Library has several great books that provide excellent information on the people of Monona County as well as Whiting and Monona County history.  Some of these include:

History of Monona County Iowa (1890)--includes Monona County Court marriages license information from 1855-1862, election results from 1854-1889, township history, city history, biographies of early settlers.

Monona County Iowa (published 1982)--expanded town histories and family history information on many of the county's residents.  Monona County, Iowa 1982 History Book Index, is the separate index book for the 1982 history book.

Whiting, Iowa 1873-1998--Whiting history including school graduation lists from 1889 through 1997, extensive history and many historic photos of Whiting and its people.

A book by U. V. Garred, History and Genealogy of Garreds (Jarretts) of Kentucky, contains information on family names:  Botner, Burgess, Byington, Chambers, Chapman, Comstock, Dyer, Elam, Freeman, Goff, Graham, Kise, Merchant, Mickle, O'Neal, Peck, Phillips, Ratcliff, See, Stafford, Vinson, Wellman, Wilson, and Woolbright, as well as the Garred family. 

A Whiting Genealogy, which lists the ancestors and descendents of Charles Edwin Whiting (1797-1867) includes many current members of the Whiting community.

Centennial books for the towns of Whiting, Sloan and Castana contain history, photos and biographical information on each community's early residents.  A Historical Profile of Sioux City is full of Sioux City information and photos.

Whiting Newsette, We have bound back issues of the Whiting Newsette paper dating from February, 1955-December, 1959; years 1961- 1969; 1971-1975; 1977 -1988; 1980 - 1984; 1986 - 1989 and 1991. These papers contain obituaries, marriages, anniversaries and much more community information.  These issues are available for your reference.

Whiting Area Cemetery Records:

The library has notebooks with alphabetical burial records for Harrison Cemetery, Hite Cemetery, and Whiting Cemetery.  These records are through the late 1970s and contain birthdate and place, death date and place, and parents names and place of birth.  There is also a notebook of information complied by the Campfire Girls containing information about The Old Stage Coach Cemetery on the Henderson property located 1/2 mile west of Whiting.

Onawa Public Library in Onawa, the county seat of Monona County Iowa has a genealogy section that includes obituary files, probate records, census records and newspapers on microfilm as well as donated family history records.  You can visit their site:  Genealogy Collection :: Onawa Public Library for more information.

The Wilbur Aalfs Library in Sioux City has an extensive collection of genealogy resources onsite, as well as the ability to locate news articles from the Sioux City Journal from Dec. 1, 1981—Jan. 31, 2009.  Visit their website for more information.
